# Adding Codes to a Coupon Batch

> Add more codes to an existing coupon batch by generating them or by pasting or uploading your own, and follow the progress.

You can add codes to a batch at any time, including a batch that offers already
use. Existing codes keep working while new ones are added.

## Before you start

**Add codes** is available when the batch is **Ready** or **In Use** and no
other add is still running. It is greyed out, with the reason shown, when:

* the batch is still preparing,
* the batch has an error, or
* a previous add is still in progress. Only one add can run at a time.

The button is on the **Settings** and **Codes in Batch** tabs. It is not on the
**Linked Offers** tab, where **Create offer** takes its place.

If you have unsaved changes on the **Settings** tab, save or discard them first.

## Add codes

1. Open the batch and select **Add codes**.
2. Choose how to add them:
   * **Manual**: paste codes (up to 1,000) or upload a CSV (up to 100,000), with
     the same rules as when [creating a batch](/coupons/creating#choose-where-the-codes-come-from).
   * **Generated codes**: set how many codes to add, up to 100,000 at a time, and
     review the generation settings. Sample codes show what to expect. To add
     more, add codes again.
3. Leave **Notify me after codes are added** on if you want an email.
4. Confirm.

<Note>
  For a very large batch with restrictive settings, generating more codes may be
  unavailable. The page says so and suggests uploading a CSV instead.
</Note>

## Follow the progress

The batch shows **Adding codes…** while the new codes are created in Shopify.
Counts are relative to this add. Adding 500 codes to a batch that already has
10,000 reads "200 of 500 added", not "10,200 of 10,500". The batch stays usable
throughout.

When the add finishes, the **Codes** total updates and the add appears in the
batch's **Timeline** with how many codes were added. If Shopify refused some of
the codes, the timeline entry links to them. See
[Troubleshooting](/coupons/troubleshooting#rejected-codes).
